English and Art History Classes

For Summer camp only

Discourse and Analytical Writing - Art History emphasis,, 1 1/2 hr

Levels: Intermediate - Advance

Grade levels:  11th - 12th 

Prerequisites: Intermediate to advance skills in reading and essay writing 

This course introduces students to European art from the 16th - 21st century and American modern and contemporary art. The main objective of this course is to teach analytical writing by utilizing visual culture as the vehicle for writing assignments. The class will teach students to be articulate speakers and writers. Emphasis is placed on a concise and articulate style of writing.

 Although it is not possible to cover nearly 700 years of art history in 6 weeks, the course will introduce single works of art, interviews of the artists, and philosophical writings by the artists. Equal emphasis will be placed on the rhetoric, use of proper grammar, and stylistic devices. Narrative and descriptive styles of writing will be covered.

This course is suited for AP Art History students, AP English students, and anyone who wishes to improve their writing and presentation skills. Here is the reality. Students can not escape the writing proficiency requirements in college and most classes require extensive essay writing. No matter what field you are in as an adult, even people with a science degree end up in careers that require writing and presentation skills. So get a head start and go beyond standardized testing and learn the tools that will help you to succeed in life.

*For Literature class, the focus will be American or International novels, biographies, short stories or poetry.


Creative and Analytical Writing - Art History emphasis, 1 1/2 hr.

Levels: Beginning and Intermediate 

Grade levels:  9th - 10th 

Prerequisites: Some experience is essay writing.

Students will learn art appreciation and writing through art history. The major cannons of Western art will be introduced through a presentation, discourse, and writing exercises. The course will focus on 19th and 20th century modern masters, such as Monet, Matisse,Van Gogh, Picasso, Kandinsky, Rothko, Warhol  and their contemporaries. The instructor will select single works of art, interviews of the artists, monographs and writings by the artists as the source for inspiration.

This is an interdisciplinary approach to Art History and English. Proper grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and style will be reinforced through various creative and analytic writing exercises. “A picture is worth a thousand words” is definitely a true saying. With this idea in mind, art becomes the perfect vehicle to teach the foundations of reading, writing, and presentation skills.

Instead of the old fashion approach to teaching grammar as a stand alone subject, we will incorporate the finer points of grammar and good writing through various writing exercises based on the visual analysis of the works of art. There will be some take home writing assignments as well.

*For Literature class, the focus will be American or International novels, biographies, short stories or poetry.

The objective of this class is to provide an innovative, fun, and engaging learning experience through an interdisciplinary approach of English and Art History.  Proper grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and style will be reinforced through various creative and analytic writing exercises. “A picture is worth a thousand words” is definitely a true saying. With this idea in mind, art becomes the perfect vehicle to teach the foundations of reading, writing, and presentation skills.

Instead of the old fashion approach to teaching grammar as a stand alone subject, we will incorporate the finer points of grammar and good writing through various writing exercises based on the visual analysis of the works of art. 

Poetry will also be discussed as an comparative framework to the visual arts.  Children respond very positively to visual learning and usually will have many things to say about a work of art. Paintings and age appropriate bios of artists will be the source of inspiration for the creative and analytical writing exercises. There will be some take home writing assignments as well.

The objective of this class is to provide an innovative, fun, and engaging learning experience through an interdisciplinary approach of English and Art History. Proper grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and style will be reinforced through various creative and analytic writing exercises. “A picture is worth a thousand words” is definitely a true saying. Students who find pure grammar or general English classes a bit dry and un-inspiring, worry no more and try our innovative approach to writing. We will incorporate the finer points of proper grammar and good writing through descriptive and narrative essays. Poetry will also be covered as another art form painted with words.  

Children respond very positively to visual learning and usually will have many things to say about a work of art. Paintings and age appropriate bios of artists will be the source of inspiration for the creative and analytical writing exercises. There will be some take home writing assignments as well. Our end goal is to maximize literacy, writing, reading comprehension, and inspire the love of learning through the arts!


Joy of Reading and Writing, 1  hr.

Levels: Beginners I/II

Grade levels: 1st - 2nd and  3rd - 4th 

Prerequisites: none

The objective of this class is to provide an innovative, fun, and engaging learning experience through an interdisciplinary approach of English and Art History. Proper grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary, reading comprehension will be introduced through various in class writing activities and discussion. “A picture is worth a thousand words” is definitely a true saying. With this idea in mind, art becomes the perfect vehicle to teach reading and writing. Poetry will also be introduced. Projects involving art and poetry will be introduced as well. 

Instead of the old fashion approach to teaching grammar as a stand alone subject, we will incorporate the finer points of grammar and good writing through various writing exercises based on the visual analysis of the works of art. Children respond very positively to visual learning and usually will have many things to say about a work of art. Paintings and age appropriate bios of artists will be the source of inspiration for the creative and analytical writing exercises.
